Featured Female Artist

Faith Ringgold is an African American Artist and Author. She was born on October 8, 1930 in Harlem, NY. She received her BA and MA before becoming an art teacher in NYC public schools.
Starting in the 1960's her work began to portray the Civil Rights Movement from a female perspective. Among her most famous artworks are her story quilts. The artwork this week's project is inspired by is one of those story quilts.
In 1992, her children's book, Tar Beach, was named a Caldecott Honor Book. It was written and illustrated from one of her story quilts.
In 2022 the New Museum, New York City, held a major retrospective of her work entitled “Faith Ringgold: American People.” Mrs. Ringgold is still working as an artist today.
